  • A Punkhouse in the Deep South is a beautiful, sweet-natured, and often hilarious oral history of 309 6th Avenue in Pensacola, Florida one of the oldest continuously inhabited punkhouses in the United States. Co-authored by fanzine legend Aaron Cometbus (Cometbus Zine) and historian Scott Satterwhite (both former residents), this book weaves together personal interviews to tell the story of a thriving DIY utopia built on ostensibly hostile, conservative terrain.

The house at 309 served as a 30-year crossroads for radical counterculture, veganism, and queer community in the Gulf Coast. Inside, residents tell the raw, outsider history of how military brats, rocker chefs, queerdoe artists, and a rotating pack of dogs lived nearly cash-free in a vibrant wonderland they made imperfectly together. It charts the grunt work behind the music—from members of bands like This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb to the organizers behind the End of the Line Cafe, feminist support groups, and regional zine culture. Featuring striking photos by Cynthia Connolly and Mike Brodie, this book is proof that southern misfit life thrives not just in opposition to its environment, but because of its deep, stubborn roots in the local community.
